101 Ways to Improve Your Riding:
Seat Posture & Balance

10 Best Tips to Improve the
Rider's Head

6.     VISUAL TRAINING & VISUALISATION:  What to look for

 Buy a Mirror

A set of sliding mirrored wardrobe doors was in my local Trading Post magazine just last week for only $40 for three great big mirrored doors.

Put them up in professional frames, sit them on the side of a building, on just plonk them temporarily on the side of the tractor...just do what you have to do but GET MIRRORS!

You simply will never achieve your real potential without them...and $40 - now there's no excuses!

Q. As you ride into the mirror...Is your helmet level to the ground?

Q. Side on in the mirror...is the front of your helmet lower than the back?

Q. In the mirror...would your earrings be level to the ground?

Q. If you were wearing sunglasses - are your sunglasses level to the ground?

Q. On the ground...If you were wearing a baseball cap: is your peak level to the horizon, or level to the dashboard of the car?

 Visualization - Pinocchio

There is another kind of 'visual' and that is "pretend" visual or  "visualization".

This technique is used by every Olympic athlete in the world when they visualize that home run towards the finish line, or visualize the medal around their neck.  Over and over they see it in their mind.

Q. If you could visualize that you were Pinocchio, the fairy tale character...would your nose be parallel to the ground?

 Where does your nose point?

Q. Ride on a straight line (not near a wall.  Point your nose over your horse's right ear for a little while...and notice what your horse does.   Your nose must be exactly at 12o'clock on a center line or jumping.

Q. Does your Pinocchio nose 'lean in' around corners and circles?

Q. An advanced homework quiz to think about:  Where does your nose point in half pass?

 Jumping

One of the things my advanced jumpers do is jump towards a mirror...training them not only too look up, but also to improve their visual awareness with all aspects of both horse and rider.
